Self-Practice for Pilates Training
Self-Practice is an integral part of all courses at Inspired Academy. We focus on ensuring that you’re creating routines that promote skill development, discipline, confidence, time management and ultimately personal growth and fulfilment to become the best version of yourself and enjoy Pilates as a method as well as a career.
Self-Practice is a compulsory part of our courses which must be completed in order to graduate. Learn more below about what is expected of you as a student, what hours are required and how to submit your hours in order to graduate.
Key Outcomes of Self-Practice
- Skill development and understanding the repertoire, how it works and feels in your own body as well as building muscle memory and refining technique
- Self discipline through setting goals, creating routines and adhering to a practice schedule
- Confidence building through seeing improvement over time and achieving set goals or milestones to advance through the repertoire
- Time management through allocation of time for practice amongst other commitments, prioritising tasks and making the most of available time
- Problem solving through encountering challenges and questions that require problem solving. Figuring out how to workshop ideas and adapting your approach is a valuable skill in personal and professional contexts. It also helps formulate meaningful questions for upcoming Practicums or Mentoring Sessions
- Stress reduction through escaping from daily pressures for a few moments and immersing yourself in an enjoyable and focused activity
- Continuous improvement through fostering a growth mindset and focusing on any roadblocks or movements you can’t do as opportunities for learning and improvement
- Creativity and innovation through creative thinking, experimentation and discovering new ways of doing things or developing new perspectives
- Personal fulfilment through fostering a sense of passion, expressing yourself and exploring Pilates as an area of interest, not just theory to study, can help derive joy from your accomplishments
Hours Breakdown
Self-Practice Hours - 30 logged hours
Self-Practice hours are defined as any time spent as a student participating in a live or online group Pilates class, or learning by yourself by practising the repertoire in your own body.
When present at a ‘live’ group Pilates class you must adhere to the Student Self-Practice Guidelines below.
- Contact the studio prior to the date of the scheduled class to enquire about participating in a class (note there may be fees attached)
- Arrive at the studio at least 10 minutes prior to the advertised class start time
- Comply with any instructions given by the studio or the instructor
- Ask permission to take notes and if approved use a pen and paper as opposed to a phone or electronic device (often not approved in group class environments)
- Ask questions of the instructor at the end of the session when they have finished teaching
- Record the date, class type, instructor name and location of the class on the hours summary sheet
- Alternatively enquire with the studio manager about hiring space to practise, or hiring equipment for an hour or two ( note it may be cheaper to do share the time with another student)
Where do I submit my hours summaries?
You will need to upload your hours summary sheet so have it ready in either an electronic format or if in hard copy format, scanned and ready to upload as an electronic document.
You must submit your hours summary sheet within your course portal.
Hours FAQ
No you have six months from the course start date to submit your completed hours log.
- By participating in a live or online group Pilates class at a studio, noting that fees may apply for reserving a space in the class
- By practising the repertoire by yourself in your own body at home or somewhere convenient (we recommend at least the Warm Up exercises daily)
- By getting together with other Pilates students and hiring a space within a studio with any desired equipment or props to share any associated costs and practise teaching each other
- By teaching willing and able friends and family
You can start self-practice hours from the course commencement date, noting that the intention is for you to be practising what is being taught throughout the course as opposed to practising repertoire you already know from previous Pilates experience or classes.
We like Pilates Anytime, Pilatesology and of course Inspired Academy TV within your online learning platform.
